Synopsis
When people and elephants meet in the rice paddies and tea plantations of Assam, the outcome is almost always tragic. Property is destroyed, lives are lost, and a climate of fear grips both species.
This documentary takes us on an emotional journey into the heart of this conflict in Numaligarh and Golaghat. Here, as the paddy ripens, a dangerous ritual unfolds. Young men, armed with torches and firecrackers, chase the wild elephants away from their crops. They call this deadly game Hatikull—a “morning sport.” But it is a sport where, all too often, no one goes home.
Yet, amidst the tension, a powerful story of hope emerges. One village, led by an engaged young couple, has chosen a radically different path. Refusing to accept tragedy as inevitable, they have pioneered a unique model of peaceful coexistence. By cultivating large tracts of their own land as dedicated food forests for the hungry elephants, they have given the animals a reason to stay out of the village. They have, remarkably, reduced the conflict to zero.
EFZH is a solution-oriented investigation into one of the most pressing human-elephant conflict zones in the world. It is a story of grief and fear, but ultimately, a testament to the extraordinary power of respect, love, and a shared meal.
